Detroit kennen we van de industrie, van de Motown, maar ook zeker van de elektronische muziek. De eer van de stad wordt tegenwoordig hoog gehouden door onder meer Omar S en diens protégé John FM. Deze laatste bracht in 2021 zijn meest recente ep 'American spirit' uit op XL Recordings en brengt daarop een treffend verhaal over zijn stad, terwijl hij thema's als sociale ongelijkheid, discriminatie en politiegeweld aankaart. Op 'American spirit' blenden deep house-klanken met outsider soul en rap, jazzy samples en soundscapes à la Dean Blunt. Boomkat schrijft: "Served with no additives or preservatives but bags of raw R&B soul, J.F.M.’s 4th solo 12” twists inspirations from Prince to Moodymann and his spar Omar-S across a handful of dare-to-be-different tunes formed over the past five years."
