Marcel Mariën, Marcel Duchamp, Marcel Broodthaers, Marcel Vandeweyer... there is always a Marcel waiting in the wings! An engraving here, an object there or a painting elsewhere: Marcel rhymes with carousel. After constantly stumbling upon this name in their collection, Chantal and Serge R. Patt decided to turn it into a game. Using a combination of love and humour, they decided to celebrate this much-loved moniker. This is how their collection was given its biggest playground at Le Botanique, where all their historical pieces will be shown in a spontaneous, emotional and playful dialogue with some of their more contemporary pieces. Marcel is on fire! Come out and play: the more Marcel, the merrier.

Botanique
A MAN, A WOMAN,
COMPLETELY UNCONNECTED TO ART OR THE ART WORLD.
SHE IS A KINDERGARTEN ASSISTANT,
HE IS A GARDNER. WELL... A GARDEN CONTRACTOR.
HE WALKS THROUGH GARDENS, THROUGH APPARTMENTS
WHERE PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURES TAKE CENTRE STAGE.
HE TALKS ABOUT THEM TO HIS SPOUSE, AT NIGHT, WHEN HE COMES BACK HOME.
THEN HE BUYS THE FIRST BOOKS AND CATALOGUES,
TO SCRATCH BENEATH THE SURFACE, TO FIND OUT A BIT MORE.
BUT THEY OFTEN FEEL LIKE AS THOUGH THEY WERE TRYING TO “READ CHINESE”.
NOT KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT ART, HE SWAPS HIS WORK WITH PIECES WITH THE ARTISTS FOR WHOM HE WORKS.
THEN THERE ARE VISITS TO EXHIBITIONS AND GALLERIES,
ENCOUNTERS WITH ARTISTS,
THE FIRST PURCHASES… PRINTS OR LITHOGRAPHS,
AND AT LAST, A TENTATIVE TRANSACTION IN AN AUCTION ROOM.
THE VIRUS SETS IN.
HE IS MAINLY INTERESTED IN MODERN ART AND SURREALISM,
SHE IS MORE INTO CONTEMPORARY ART.
THE TWO COMBINE TO FORM A HARMONIOUS WHOLE.
