Will Butler + Sister Squares release “Willows” in support of newly announced November tour dates across Europe and the United Kingdom. “Willows” is the first new material from Butler since May 2022, and the debut release from Will Butler + Sister Squares.A New York–based band rooted in dance and theater, Sister Squares is Sara Dobbs, Julie Shore, Jenny Shore, and Miles Francis, who have toured on and off with Will Butler since 2015 as a backing band but are now full collaborators.
Co-produced with Miles Francis, “Willows” is a ghostly, oceanic song built around a towering chorus where Butler is joined in full force by Sister Squares. “There’s something eternally hopeful about the sound of voices singing in a room together,” he says. “‘Humans singing together in a room’ is probably the prime philosophical building block of this band.
”‘Willows’ is about leaving the past in the past,” Butler says of the song. “Nostalgia is sweet, but it’s a poison. The scene of the song is someone driving off into the wilderness to meet an old woman—one of the Fates, like in a folk tale. And maybe he wants to be young again, or wants things back the way they used to be. And she says: Anything can happen, for a price.”
