Porridge Radio make indie rock for the angsty antisocial in all of us
Pitchfork

"What is going on with me?", asks Dana Margolin in Born Confused, the song that opens her initiation album Every Bad (Secretly Canadian, 2020). She does it with two overlapping voices: one that sings and one that screams, and at the end of the song she screams over and over "Thank you for leaving me / Thank you for making me happy". This viscerality is what makes Porridge Radio strong, following from their native Brighton that path of indie rock that alternates whispers with howls in the tradition of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, PJ Harvey or their contemporaries Big Thief. And, like any new link in old school, Dana Margolin's band adds their own touch: in this case, a lyrical depth that leaves scars if you don’t watch out and a desire for renewal that sometimes takes them towards the distorted pop by Charli XCX distorted. The old and the new, the same anticipation.
