The power trio of punk-jazz-rock geniuses have struck again with their fifth album, an hour of glorious, messy alchemy. With over 20 albums released in a 30-year career, Marc Ribot is an all-round explorer of the dowtown scene; it's as leader of Ceramic Dog that the guitarist and composer has proved most consistent. To his left, Shahzad Ismaily, a drummer renowned for his omnivocity. To his right, Ches Smith, former drummer with indie band Xiu Xiu, who has forged a parallel practice as a composer and percussionist in Haitian music.
Despite these mercurial tendencies, Ceramic Dog celebrate 18 years of union and present “Connection”, an album that stretches the band's abundant qualities into ten tracks of casual interpretation, heavy feedback and Ribot's agitated vocals. This time, in addition to their avant-garde post-rock/noise identity, Ceramic Dog mix rock, garage, boogaloo, free jazz, disco and Cuban sound, among others. Galvanized by so much freedom and expressiveness, it's hard to remain unmoved by this music, which reflects the fragility of human relationships and endeavors.
“Connection” is Ceramic Dog's proposal for what rock could be in a world more invested in social justice than commerce. To put it simply, Ceramic Dog arrive at Le Botanique armed with more than just theoretical slogans.
FONDRY
