Following the motto "beauty is the new punk rock", Joan Wasser took centre stage as Joan as Police Woman after years of support and collaboration. Wasser's project blends two of her music's deepest influences: the classic soul of legends such as Al Green and Nina Simone, and experimental underground bands ranging from Sonic Youth to Bad Brains.
With her heartfelt 2006 debut Real Life, she established herself as a singer-songwriter capable of a rare combination of vulnerability and sophistication. Wasser has maintained this reputation while adding new dimensions to her music with each album, whether it's the jazz leanings of 2011's 'The Deep Field', the celebration of vintage soul on 2014's 'The Classic', the blend of traditional and avant-garde sounds on 2018's 'Damned Devotion' or her collaboration with Afrobeat legend Tony Allen on 2021's 'The Solution Is Restless', the emotional honesty that underpins her music is unrivalled.
